Principal’s Message
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to St Charles Catholic Primary School Ryde. As you navigate our site, you will gain some understanding of the wonderful sense of community enjoyed by our students and their families and the opportunities we provide for all children to fully develop their skills and talents.
Our school is embedded within the faith-filled and Christ-centred parish of St Charles Borromeo and a rich history of prayer, education and outreach. We celebrate valuable traditions that make up our history from Saint Charles Borromeo, the Mercy Sisters and the Josephites.
I share the leadership of this school with our priests, Father Greg Morgan, the leadership team and the teaching staff. All play an integral part in the leadership of our school and have a key role in policy and program formation and evaluation. It is also our privilege to work in partnership with families to develop the faith of our children and to assist them in achieving their full potential.
St Charles Catholic Primary School offers a rich and varied curriculum, with our teaching staff embracing twenty-first century teaching methods. We are continually adapting to the changing needs of our youth and their world. It is a place where all students can discover who they are and develop the self-confidence to take on new challenges in a caring and nurturing environment, supported by the whole school community. Our school is highly regarded by the local community.
I feel privileged to be in the role of executive principal at this stage in the history of St Charles Catholic Primary School. I invite you to come visit us to see!
Frank Cohen
Executive Principal
St Charles Catholic Primary School Ryde commenced in 1858 with an enrolment of 30 children. When state aid was withdrawn in 1878, there was an influx of nuns and brothers of religious orders from Europe to teach in the schools. The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart (Brown Josephites) taught in the school from 1883–1891.
In 1892, the Little Company of Mary Sisters (LCM) took over St Charles School because Cardinal Moran would not allow Catholic children to go to state schools. In 1898, the LCM Sisters handed the school over to the Sisters of Mercy with an enrolment of 25 children. The new brick school building commenced in 1899. The next section, a two story structure, opened in 1938. In 1983, the new hall and library were opened and finally, in 1988, eight new classrooms were built.
